Job SummaryThe Box Shop Technician is responsible for constructing, assembling, repairing, and maintaining wooden tree boxes used to support and transport large specimen trees throughout Moon Valley Nurseries' farm operations. This role utilizes woodworking tools, equipment, and construction techniques to build custom boxes that meet company standards for quality, durability, and safety.The Box Shop Technician works closely with Farm Management, Production Teams, and Equipment Operators to ensure tree boxes are built accurately and efficiently to support production schedules and inventory demands. This position requires strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to safely operate woodworking tools and equipment in a fast-paced outdoor environment.Key Duties and ResponsibilitiesBox Construction & AssemblyConstruct custom wooden tree boxes according to company specifications and production requirements.Measure, cut, assemble, and secure lumber using hand tools, power tools, and woodworking equipment.Build boxes of various sizes to accommodate different tree varieties and root ball dimensions.Ensure all completed boxes meet quality, safety, and structural standards.Perform repairs and modifications to existing tree boxes as needed.Assist with special projects requiring custom box fabrication or design adjustments.Woodworking & Equipment OperationSafely operate woodworking equipment including saws, nail guns, drills, impact drivers, sanders, and other construction tools.Maintain accuracy when measuring, cutting, and assembling materials.Inspect tools and equipment regularly to ensure safe operation.Report equipment issues, maintenance needs, or safety concerns to management.Follow all company procedures related to tool usage and equipment operation.Material ManagementOrganize and maintain lumber, hardware, fasteners, and construction materials.Monitor inventory levels and communicate material needs to supervisors.Minimize material waste through proper planning and efficient construction practices.Maintain a clean and organized work area.Production SupportWork closely with farm production teams to ensure boxes are completed according to operational schedules.Assist with staging, transporting, and preparing completed boxes for field use.Support tree boxing operations as needed.Help meet daily, weekly, and seasonal production goals.Safety & ComplianceFollow all company safety policies and procedures.Properly utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE).Maintain safe work practices while operating tools and handling materials.Keep work areas clean and free of hazards.Participate in safety meetings and training programs.Report accidents, injuries, or unsafe conditions immediately.Teamwork & CommunicationCollaborate with supervisors, equipment operators, and farm personnel to support operational objectives.Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic.Follow instructions and complete assigned tasks efficiently.Support continuous improvement initiatives within the Box Shop operation.Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesPrevious woodworking, carpentry, construction, manufacturing, or related experience preferred.Experience operating hand tools, power tools, and woodworking equipment.Ability to read measurements accurately and perform basic math calculations.Mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.Ability to safely lift, carry, and move heavy materials.Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.Strong work ethic, reliability, and dependability.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Forklift experience is a plus but not required.EducationHighschool DiplomaPhysical requirements/Working ConditionsWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds.
